I just went to the close-by shopping centre to get a sandwich when I noticed the unusually long queue of people going to the flower shop. Upon closer inspection, almost all of them seemed to be men. It took me a while to figure out what was going on, but then it struck me - it's international women's day.
How sad that the consumption of cut flowers is what this day has become. To me, it should be about awareness of the things that still make women second-class citizens in many places: little or no education, little or no power in their own societies, little or no control over their own sexuality, domestic abuse and so much more. Even if you want to keep your thoughts national, there are many things that can be improved in terms of women's rights. Sexual harassment is very common, and women still make less money than men for doing the same job.
If people feel the need to spend money on something on this day, why not give it to charities who help women who are abused, who give women opportunities to learn skills that help them support themselves and their families, who teach them about their rights, or who try to give girls the chance to go to school?
Do we have to make everything into a consumer party?

a DD for my poem!
about a month ago, my poem summer storm got a daily deviation! i really liked working on this one so it's fun that other people have found it worth reading. at some point i was only doing photography, then poetry took over, and now i think i'm trying to find a balance and the interface between the two. i think this was part of that. thanks to @DelightfulDolphin for suggesting it and for @Barosus for featuring it!
another poem published in consilience!
A couple of weeks ago, my poem 'can the sea drown?' was published in the journal Consilience! You can read it here and listen to me reading it here. When reading it, I was really glad I had included the words 'silicious ooze' in the poem. They're tasty words. :D Consilience is an online journal that publishes science poetry. I enjoyed working with their editors!
poetry news
So apart from the good news of my poem 'raised a girl' getting Daily Deviation recently, I have some other fun poetry-related news: at the beginning of September, I was awarded third prize in a poetry competition here in Finland. :) The competition was for Swedish-language poems (by a Fenno-Swedish foundation), and you could send in up to 10 poems. I sent in a collection of kayaking/friendship related poems, and found out during the summer that they apparently had liked it. There were 156 entries, and the judges were writers whose work I respect a lot. So that was a confidence boost! There was an award ceremony and everything, with two actors reading excerpts of the winning poems, music, a streamed discussion with the winners, and good food at the end. All the information and poetry is in Swedish, but here are a couple of links to the news article on the foundation's website and to the digital publication (with a quote from one of my poems on the cover!). As a picture is worth
some published poems!
after a few weeks hanging out with family around christmas and new year's, i came back home to an anthology with my name and three of my poems in it! it's a swedish-language anthology, and the theme is the kvarken archipelago, which is a unesco world heritage site and an archipelago i spend a lot of time in. my cottage is there, and i kayak around there too. it feels really good to have my poems accepted and to actually see them printed, especially as the book looks so good! https://www.boklund.fi/bokhandel/skonlitteratur/vertikal-4-kvarken-i-ord-och-bild-p-660.html

you are right to be angry, Hannele...
[much of it almost seems 'Biblical', doesn't it?]
[or, choose a different volume of 'God's truth'.]
